1844 House

Great restaurant: The 1844 house in Potsdam. All meat is bought from local farmers. They use local veggies when they are in season too. Bread is from the Carriage House Bakery. I'm very excited about it. It's about time. We need to be more responsible with the food we eat. I also know for a fact that the food is mouth watering good. The money stays within the community. It's great! Let me know if you try it out. I like to promote places like that. Click the link. http://www.1844house.com/

That used to be French's 1844 house I believe.

Yes. The building was built as a house for farm hands in 1844. The main house is still located right up the hill and is still pretty much the same as it was in the 1800's. The main house still belongs to the same family. The restaurant closed a couple of years ago. The woman who ran the restaurant is a descendant of the orignal owners and she currently lives in the main house. It's an interesting piece of history. The restaurant is sort of like a posh country setting. Very fresh, rich, organic foods.

I have heard that the food is very good but who are the new owners catering to? $80.00 for a dinner for two? My grandparents were very excited to go but were actually shaken at the cost! New owners should realize we are country folk and are willing to pay for a wonderful meal but guess what... at that price only once a year. I think the prices should be lower and patronage would increase... Great food but out of many price ranges...

The food is amazing and the staff is wonderful. You really can't put a price tag on a great meal delivered by great service. For those of us who live in the area, we all know that an upscale quality restaurant has been missing for quite some time. The 1844 house has come to the rescue.

Why in the world do some people have to degrade a restaurant just becuase it serves food they don't understand or can't appreciate? Don't say dinner for two at 1844 House is $80, when you can enjoy early dining there for less than $40 a couple. This is a rare fine dining experience at a reasonable price. If you want dog food, go to the food court in the mall The Lobster House in Norwood.
